How Wonderful and How Horrible

How wonderful it is when:
A child smiles at you and your heart melts away!
You love someone and this someone truly loves you.
You give freely and the recipient appreciates your giving.
You help someone, ask for no rewards, and receive an acknowledgment.
You treat someone with respect and this someone counters your respect.
You are happy for someone’s joy and sad for someone’s anguish and the feeling is mutual.
You accept the individuality of people and they accept yours.
You appreciate the personal freedoms of others and they appreciate yours.
You understand and appreciate diversity and the entire world feels the same way.
You want to share every moment of your life with a lover and this lover responds with: “How noble of you!”

How horrible it is when:
A child smiles at you, yet you do not reciprocate with a genuine smile.
You love someone, yet this someone does not love you or pretends to love you!
You give freely and the recipient considers you a fool, yet continues to take advantage of your good nature.
You help someone and receive a stab in the back.
You treat someone with respect, yet this someone treats you with insults and indignations.
You are happy for someone’s joy and sad for someone’s anguish, yet your anguish is this someone’s happiness and your happiness is this someone’s anguish.
You accept the individuality of people, yet they are determined to change you.
You appreciate the personal freedoms of others, yet they want to shackle yours.
You understand and appreciate diversity, yet many in the world use it to drive a wedge between each other.
You want to share every moment of your life with a lover and this lover responds with: “What a selfish thought!”

I feel the need to take the positive perspective. It is so easy to allow negative feelings to overwhelm us. That is why I try to use every ounce of my energy to take the positive view. I look for the child's smile, I try to love and hope I am loved in return, I try to give and hope it is appreciated, I try to help and ask nothing, I try treat all, even the most humble with respect, and on and on. Considering the negatives can become self fulfilling prophecies.

      Dear Ron,

That's why it is "wonderful" to have such behavior and outlook--a behavior that all true religions calls for. Such behavior is indicative of the refined Sayyals that you possess and how such Sayyals are extremely bothered by the "horrible" behavior that goes counter to their nature.

I am also bothered by the "horrible" and would rather die than to live in such a degraded and negative environment. Granted, no one is perfect and we all make mistakes. The contrast between the "wonderful" and the "horrible" is a reminder to the reader (and to myself) that the purpose of life is to Spiritually elevate our Souls--something that can only be accomplished through decent behavior, hard work, and sacrifices in order to benefit humanity.

      Sincerely,

      Mounir Murad
